A While Todd and Wendy brought you into my life Back in the summer of ’86 Dad heard “Doug Stearly’s son” and shook his head Said, “Girl, you better run from this” Maybe I should’ve listened, but then you smiled Those clear blue eyes were hard to fight You could make me laugh without even trying And somehow everything just felt right I fell for the laughter and those blue eyes You fell for my boobs Funny what starts a love story That still makes us smile today Then came our first date and that sizzling plate You went to cut your steak that night It slid right off and landed in your lap You put it back like everything was fine I looked at you and told you straight “I don’t like you,” right from the start Funny how the man I said I didn’t like Would end up owning my heart We didn’t know where it was going Didn’t know what we’d go through We just had our little way of saying forever Without ever saying it… A while… That’s what we called it back then Before we knew how long forever was Or how much life could fit inside of love A while became a wedding ring October sixth, nineteen-ninety It became waking up beside you And you still making me laugh It became a million little moments That somehow became our life And if you asked me how long I wanted you… I only knew one answer A while. But our road wasn’t always straight and easy You left and three years passed us by Then in ’89 you came back sorry For the heart you’d left behind Gloria shut that door right in your face Before you got the chance to make things right But somehow love got one more chance And this time we held on tight Our first racing trip left us stranded Memorial weekend in New York Looking back, that broken-down ride Feels about right for us, of course Because nothing’s ever been picture perfect But perfect was never what we needed We just kept laughing through the crazy And loving through everything between it A while… That’s what we called it back then And somewhere between those racing weekends We stopped being kids and became best friends A while became working side by side Building something of our own It became family and friends around us And a place that felt like home Then in ’96, God gave us Douglas And love became something new Our Goodbuddy, the greatest gift Life ever gave to me and you And watching him win Atlantic City Once… twice… then three times somehow Those are the moments I wish We could go back and live right now That’s what became of a while. Then life taught us what love really means. It wasn’t racing. It wasn’t laughter. It wasn’t all the good times we’d known. It was 2002 When I got sick And I didn’t have to face it alone. Then 2003 came without warning And racing nearly took you away I spent that summer at Hershey Wishing I could make everything okay There are moments you never forget No matter how many years go by When the person who’s always made you laugh Suddenly makes you terrified to cry And somewhere inside those hardest days Something changed in me and you The things that should’ve broken us Only pulled us closer through That’s when I finally understood What those two little words had meant… All along. A while… Wasn’t just something we used to say It meant I’m staying right beside you When everything else falls away It meant hospital rooms and holding hands When neither one knew what came next It meant laughing again when the hurt was over And being thankful for what we had left It meant broken wrists and Walker Lake That Jeep going over the bank You and Cindy and those alarm clocks And a thousand other things that still make us laugh It meant racing and working together Family and friends and our Goodbuddy too It meant every ordinary morning I got another day with you Wally Gator… After all these years I’m still your Louise And those blue eyes Are still the eyes I want looking back at me They said we wouldn’t make it a year. Maybe that’s my favorite part. Because thirty-six years later You still have the same place in my heart. No… That’s not true. I love you more now. Because the girl who met you in ’86 Only knew the boy who made her laugh. She didn’t know the husband Who’d stand beside her when life hurt. She didn’t know the father You would become. She didn’t know we’d build a life Working side by side. She didn’t know how many times She’d look across a room And be thankful… It was you. Scan to listen
